Exegesis is the evidence-based analysis of a biblical text in order to provide an explanation or critical interpretation of the text in light of its original context. (The term “exegesis” can refer to both the process and the resulting critical interpretation.) The goal of this course is for students to learn to: 1) use technical exegetical skills, engaging in systematic evaluation of evidence; 2) recognize and critique their own assumptions and reflexive interpretive desires, becoming exegetically self-aware; and 3) through these things, to develop responsible critical interpretations of biblical texts.
Come willing to challenge your assumptions and instinctive interpretations!
Prerequisites: OT 101 and NT 101; or permission of the instructor.
